homemade playdough

How to make playdough:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup salt

  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

  • 2 cups water

  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)

  • Food coloring, optional (I like Wilton gel food coloring or AmeriColor gel)

  • Airtight storage (bags or jars)

Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment. Add the water, oil and food coloring to a pot and heat until boiling. CAREFULLY add the boiling water to the stand mixer as it slowly mixes. Increase the speed as the mixture comes together. Continue stirring on high until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball (should take a couple minutes). Turn it out onto a cutting board or wax paper. Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. If you’re making multiple colors you can divide the dough into balls (for how many colors you want) and add the color to the dough as you knead.

Store the playdough inside an airtight container. You can knead in a little water if the dough starts to firm up. Keeps for up to 3 months.
